"London, once a city with overlooked spaces open to occupation and experimentation, has become an increasingly difficult environment for emerging artists. Those graduating from art school now find fewer spaces in which to work, with affordable studios a thing of the past. In the five-year period between 2014 and 2019, it is predicted that 30 per cent of artists’ studios in London will be lost"
Studio Jum'ah is a neo-diasporic (re)imagining of the muslim Friday prayer, as a site of contemporary art production vis-a-vis sacred devotion.
It provides an opportunity to pray and create as part of the same act; through a collaborative process, which takes its inspiration from Vilém Flusser, a philosopher of new media and Nasreddin Hodja, the Wise Fool of muslim traditions. Participants will have a chance to explore how artistic practice can engage with religious ritual, so as to transform the latter into a co-authored experience. Tangible aspects of the prayer relating to structure, hierarchy and knowledge will be (re)positioned in light of the gallery space. Furthermore, this intervention interrogates the idea of a studio and gallery as sanctified spaces of modernity; spaces that often function as socially-removed and exclusionary - especially when it comes to diasporic bodies of flesh and praxis.
Please note that the timing of this event will begin with the zenith of the sun and culminate with a communal act of worship which is open to all, regardless of background or faith. Space will be limited on the day, so please arrive promptly if you wish to take part.
